Q: Air drop from Mac Book Air to iPhone 6S

I have a 2014 MacBook Air OS X version 10.9.5 and an iPhone 6S and I can't get them to discover each other. Can anyone explain why?

As it says, you need to be running Yosemite (OS X 10.10) or later.

Thank you and I kind of had that feeling that was the problem. Abroad now and will have to wait to download since downloading here is slow and a headache.
