I should mention that I sync the new-ish iPhone (march 2016) with a mac mini for calendar and contacts, as a home base for this iPhone, but i want to keep the mini free from music files. I want to sync my new iPhone to the macbook pro where the music files are, playlists, etc. of my old iPhone, and capture those if I can.

It is referencing the iTunes version on your Mac. Your Mac OS X version is too old for the supported version of iTunes which communicates with iOS 9. You can upgrade this, for free, through your Mac App Store on your computer so long as your Mac meets minimum system requirements. I would recommend a backup of your Mac if you do not already have one active. That way, you risk very little if anything at all. It has always been recommended to backup your devices before running OS updates, so I'm not trying to scare you here.

If you do not wish to update your Mac OS on your MBP, you could organize your iTunes Library on that Mac if it is not already allocated to a single folder by using the following article.

Locate and organize your iTunes media files - Apple Support

After this, you can move your iTunes Library to an external HDD and plug that external into your Mac Mini

Referencing your iTunes on your Mac Mini to your external library, so as not to take up storage on your internal HDD of your Mac Mini, you can then continue to sync your devices as you wish.

Thanks to both Rudegar and BBoiss. The error message is indeed vague in light of your messages. All is clear now. I am running 10.7.5 on the mac book pro, so the next step is to back-up, and upgrade the mac book pro to an OS later than OS 8 apparently.

    Thanks again.

I see your second reply, BBoiss. I'll look into that also after I investigate the ramifications of updating the mac book pro OS.

Thanks again. It's good just knowing you're out there.
