Q: Mac mail app rejects my password repeatedly

Almost a week ago the Mail app on my Macbook stopped receiving mails from my hotmail account. It asks me for my password(which I know is the right one) but it repeatedly rejects it. I have one more hotmail account added, but the problem mentioned happens only to one of them. The Mail app on my iphone works fine for both the hotmail accounts. I also connected to my hotmail account through Outlook.com on Safari. Everything worked fine. The problem only appears on my Macbook's Mail app. I don't know what to do. Please help me!

P.S. This page didn't help me at all. if Mail repeatedly asks for the password of your email account

As long as you are using IMAP (not POP3) settings with Hotmail —>

    • Close Mail.app.
    • Go to System Preferences / Internet Accounts / Select your Hotmail account and delete it.
    • Reboot
    • Open System Preferences / Internet Accounts / Re-add the account

I have had the same issue with Outlook/Hotmail and the refresh fixed it up.

Thanks for your responce! Mine is a POP account. Do you think I shouldn't try it? Or you've tried it to a pop account and it didn't work?

Only concern with a POP account is that your mail is downloaded to your machine and not kept on the server. You run the risk of deleting your mail database by removing the account.

You should be able to disable the current POP account add the IMAP Hotmail account to see how the account will respond.

    Disable POP:

Open Mail.app / Preferences / Accounts / Select the POP Hotmail account and uncheck 'Enable this account'

    Quit Mail.app

Open System Preferences / Internet Accounts / Select Add Other Account

Add your Hotmail account (the mail server should add as IMAP: imap-mail.outlook.com)

See if your mail content/history is correct.

Thank you this really helped! Now can I delete the inactive pop account and keep the new imap only, or the data will be lost?

Transfer the e-mails to an On My Mac mailbox before deleting the account. Mail/Mailbox/New Mailbox.
