can't trim on import

I am trying to import into FCPX. the I and O buttons will not set in and out points. I am also unable to drag the yellow outline to trim.

Of note -- maybe related or not -- my import window is missing the buttons to select list or icon view.

Weird stuff. 😕

(PS - of course I am using legit software downloaded from the Apple App store)
