Q: MacBook won't boot
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. It won't fully boot. A little more than halfway through the progress bar turns white and it seems to freeze. I can not boot in safety mode, but was able to boot in recovery mode and ran first aid on the hard drive. It seems ok, but still will not boot. I was also able to make another back up via disk utility (I think)--last prior back up via time machine was 2+ weeks ago... Any suggestions? Is the hard drive failing?

That is a possibility.
Run an Apple Hardware Test:

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.
Try SMC and NVRAM resets:

The try a safe boot;

If no success, boot into the recovery partition as you did before.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid again and the try to reinstall the OSX.
If the installation is successful, try a start.
If still no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
Ciao.
