How do you add a new Wifi network to AppleTV while the ethernet cable is plugged in?

I want my AppleTV to connect to a new base station.

I can only control the AppleTV on my iPhone remote app.

The app only works when AppleTV is plugged directly into the router.

Having it plugged in disables the wifi settings in the network control panel.

I'm wondering if I didn't misunderstand your initial question. If it's the case that you have lost the remote, but can't configure the Apple TV to connect to a wifi network because you need to be connected to the network to do that (catch 22), there are a couple of things you might try.

Firstly may I say though that I think purchasing a remote is your best solution.

However if you have the Apple TV 3 or better you should be able to use your phone to set up the Apple TV via bluetooth providing the phone is also configured to use your wifi network.

Use an iOS device to set up your Apple TV (3rd generation) - Apple Support

Alternatively check out an app called ciderTV

You might be able to control ATV using the TV remote. The arrow keys, enter, and return (Menu) work for me. That might be enough to let you configure the WiFi. You can also buy reasonably priced third party replacement remotes. They're advertised for ATV 2 and 3, but they'll work on ATV 4. No Siri or touchpad of course, but you can use the arrow keys on the keyboard.

Then you will need to do this manually a new base station will require the entry of a password (assuming there is one)

Why, what is up with the remote that came with it.

That's not my experience, the remote app works over ethernet and wifi.

Yes, you cannot change this.
