Q: WiFi slows down after iPhone 6s connected

Good day everyone.. (not good for me obviously)

I have questions about my iPhone 6s (iOS 9.3.2) connecting to my TP-Link Router (Model No. TL-WR740N / TL-WR740ND) and its performance.

Whenever I connect my iPhone to the WiFi network, suddenly the ping get very high ( from 13ms to suddenly 2000ms ), and after some seconds, it goes RTO. The ping then stays around 2000ms, 1000ms but with a lot of RTOs. I checked the ping on my laptop, and all other devices connected to WiFi are also RTO. I tried to disconnect all other devices except my laptop and my iPhone and still RTO. This problem lasts for 20 - 30 mins, sometimes longer. once I disconnected my iPhone, it all went back to normal (13ms).

I tried connecting ONLY my iPhone to the WiFi and still the same, I even got hard time just to open Google!

My iPhone isn't connected through bluetooth or USB, not being charged, the distance between my iPhone and the router is < 3meters.

I already checked some articles and some questions too.

  1. iPhone slows down entire home network
  2. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6734990?start=0&tstart=0
  3. WiFi connection problem (iPhone to TP-Link router)

according to those articles, It may be because of :

  1. iCloud automated backup.
  2. Photo backup.
  3. Auto app store update.
  4. router problem

the problem is, my iPhone is fresh from the box, I don't even have a lot of apps, I don't even use iCloud, I disable auto app store update, I disable location, and I already follow all the possible solution from the third article (changing router setting) and still the same.

I've tried restarting my router, restarting my iPhone, change channel width of the router (auto, 20Mhz, 40Mhz), change mode (11gbn, 11g only, 11b only, 11n only), enable/disable QSS, enable/disable WMM and still the same.

What could be the cause of this problem?

Your help is appreciated, Thank You.

Turn your router off for 30 seconds when its back on go to settings on iPhone reset network settings

After reset enter your router wireless key .

Also go to website for your make of router check for firmware update .

If your phone is new I would take it back to the store for testing. Nonetheless, below is a User Tip about Wi-Fi issues. Suggest starting from the top and working down. Maybe one of them will help.

    1) Perform a Forced Restart:  Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Allow device to restart.

    2) Reset Network Settings:  Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Rejoin the Network again.

    3) Reboot Router/Modem:  Unplug from power for 2 minutes and plug again. Update Router Firmware (check manufacturer’s support website for a newer FW). Also try different bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and different bandwidths (20 MHz recommended for the 2.4 band).

    4) Change to Google's DNS:  Settings > Wi-Fi > Click on the Network, Delete all numbers under DNS and enter 8.8.8.8 or alternatively 8.8.4.4

    5) Disable device prioritization on the router if this feature is available. Also disable any VPN apps and test Wi-Fi again.

    6) Determine if other Wi-Fi devices on network are working well (other iOS devices, Macs, PCs).

    7) Try device at another Network, i.e., neighbors’, public coffee house, etc.

    8) Backup and Restore the Device using iTunes (ask for additional for details if desired).

    9) Go to an Apple Store for hardware evaluation.

ive noticed this same thing. ive been a 'loyal' iphone user since 4s but every time a new iphone is released, my wifi/gps/bluetooth just reduced to trash and im obligated to buy a new one. im so convinced this is some kind of 'product life cycle strategy' that apple has deployed amidst their success in pairing devices. my iphone is complete crap sometimes and the iphone7 is garbage. ill prob make the switch away from iphones.
