WD40

I bought a cheap ibook 500, installed an Airport card and have ordered some more RAM. It's great - except for the hinge which has seized a little with age and creaks when I open the ibook. I am considering spraying a little WD40 on the hinge but would welcome any advice before I attempt it.

I wouldn't do that. It won't penetrate where the noise is coming from and it will be a bit messy.

You may find the creak goes away if you open the screen quicker. I had a 500mhz iBook (5 years ago..) which did that when new, but it eventually went away. It may be because prior to sale it wasn't used much.

Go for it. Use the red tube that comes with WD40 and direct the spray, in short bursts, into the hinge. Open and close the lid a few times, and spray again.

Avoid spraying onto the screen or near the speakers, and be sure to wipe away any runoff.

WD40 does not cause short-circuits, but try to avoid letting the stuff get inside the iBook. Open the lid and first cover any parts with tape that may allow fluid inside the iBook.
