Q: Macbook Pro (Retina Mid-2012) not turning on properly

Hey guys,

So my rMBP 15" (Mid-2012) running El Capitan does not respond to the power on button. When it's not plugged in and charging, it is completely dead and does not respond to anything. The second I plug it in to charge, the fans come on, and cycle (they turn on and off, on and off - basically sounds like someone breathing). The screen does not come on, and there is no chime. If I do an SMC reset, the fans turn off, but come back on in the same way almost immediately. The reset also has no effect on the power button. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi.Take a look at the steps suggested by Apple in this article:

If your Mac won't turn on - Apple Support

    Try Safe Boot:

    - Shut down your Mac

    - Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button

    - Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key

    - Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign

    - After your Mac boots up, restart it as you usually do.

If this doesn't help, follow the instructions below:

    - Shut down your Mac

    - Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button

    - Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key

    - Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign

    - Once you see Desktop, start a Disk Utility scan to detect and repair file system errors (don't forget to choose your main hard drive)

    - Click on Verify Disk and then, if asked to fix problems, on Repair Disk

    - After this, click on Verify Disk Permissions and then on Repair Disk Permissions

    - After the process is finished, shut down your Mac and turn it back on after about 30 seconds

Apart from that, take a look at this Apple article and follow the instructions on Resetting NVRAM shown there: How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Try resetting the System Management Controller: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

    Hope this helps!

Hi, I can't carry out a safe boot is disk utility skin as there is not startup tone, and no apple sign - the screen does not even turn on. I've tried to reset the NVRAM but I'm not sure if that even worked as there was no visible response/change. The SMC reset only temporarily stopped the fans but did nothing to fix the power button. Just one more thing I forgot to add in my original post - the computer was functioning perfectly 12 hours ago. It seemingly stopped working over night while on a desk in sleep mode. Is any of this characteristic of a faulty logic board?

Your MBP has some type of hardware fault.  Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
