Q: black scree on incoming call on iphone

At least four times I have received an incoming call but was unable to answer it because the screen remained black and unresponsive.  What could be wrong? My phone is an iPhone 6 with IOS 8.3.

After the call has been missed, does your iPhone "wake back up?" Are you able to use it again, or do you have to use a Forced Restart as the screen remains non-responsive?  You obviously wouldn't be able to restart your phone through the recommended first method of rebooting your phone if the screen is in this state.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

I would definitely recommend creating a full backup of your iPhone for starters before any further deep diving into troubleshooting.

How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support

After which, if your issue has been continuing, attempt Resetting All Settings through Settings>General>Reset. This does not erase your content, as that is a separate option that you will see on this screen, but it will put your settings to their default state. Things you will notice off the bat will be the background screen, WiFi passwords, and Alarms among others. All of these can simply be re-entered though.

If you are still having problems, it is recommended to Restore the phone.

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

First test to see if the issue continues with your iPhone Restored as a New Phone, and not from the backup you created earlier. If it does continue, seek further assistance from Apple directly. Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support

Otherwise, if it does not continue, attempt to restore your backup and see if the issue remains resolved.

Note: Restore will download the latest iOS from Apple Servers and load a clean install to your iPhone.

I get no response to pressing any button or touching the screen.  I pressed the Sleep button and also pressed and held it longer like turning it off but the ringer keeps ringing.  These incidents have happened over a period of several months, not at all frequently.  After a few minutes I am able to wake the phone and then use Recents to see who called me.  I was also planning to update to IOS 9.  Is it possible that will fix the problem?
