Q: Why does my message show a read receipt on one device and not the other?

I use my iMessage on both my iPhone 5 and my Macbook Air, however, occasionally when I send a message from either device it shows a read receipt from the other person on my mac, but not on my iPhone. The message on my iPhone stays as 'delivered' until much later and then appears to be read (I still eventually get read receipts on my phone), but my mac will deliver the message and it appears that the message has been read later on, but shows the read receipt way before my iPhone does. I don't know if this is just a glitch and they haven't actually read the message, or if my mac book is somehow showing the read receipts first??

iPhone 5, iOS 9.3.2

    Hi,

This has to do with which ID is used to send the iMessages and which devices are then synced to see that info.

Broadly speaking the device sending will see the Delivered return info.

If that is the Mac using the Apple ID it will "see" the "read" response first.

However if the Mac is using the iPhone Number to send  then some info may turn up on the iPhone first as it is the device the number belongs to.

The Mac is only then seeing "Copies" of the sync version.

Add to this the fact that some people will have one device set to send Read Receipts and  not another.

There is basically not a precise answer as there are loads of factors that can influence it.
