It sounds like you are seeing a black screen while using the Camera app on y our iPhone 5s. The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for troubleshooting:
Get help with the camera on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You see a closed lens or black screen
If you see a closed lens or black screen when you open the Camera app, try these steps:
- Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
- Force the app to close, then open the Camera app again.
- Restart your device, then open the Camera app again.
- If your device has a front and rear camera, try both cameras by tapping
. If you see the closed lens or black screen on only one camera, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Providerfor more help.

What didn't work? If you followed all 4 steps that were provided, you would have gone to Apple. What did they have to say when you brought the phone to them?

May 28, 2016 9:26 AM in response to ChrisJ4203by mgmich,Thank you Chris for your reply but I'm not going to Apple store yet, as I'm sure that many of us prefers to fix it ourselves, I have also followed these steps that I found on youtube and the one from Pedro which I had already tried but did it again just to see if perhaps this morning it would work and it didn't.
I have tried all of these already, I am posting them because it may help someone else with this problem but it didn't help me.

May 28, 2016 9:31 AM in response to mgmichby ChrisJ4203,Pedro d has provided you with the troubleshooting steps. The only thing I would add before going to the Apple Store would be to restore the device from backup or restore to factory. After that, Apple is your choice. If you determine you do not what to do what is necessary to get your device working, then that is your choice. Good luck.
