Q: iPhone 6 - screen will not turn on; need to remove photos from phone

Hi,

Two nights ago, my phone died, and I did not have an apple-certified charger to re-charge it. I tried using knockoffs, but it would not charge past 1%.  When I got home, I plugged it into my computer with my apple cord and it started to charge. The screen worked and I was able to access my apps, photos, etc.  I *think* the device was recognized as "Kimberlee's 2nd iPhone" or something like that on iTunes, but I am not totally sure as I was just happy it was charging at that point.

When I reached approximately 50-60% battery life, the screen suddenly would not turn on.  I was able to turn the phone off by pressing the power and home screen for 15 seconds, and then pressing the power button to turn it on again.  But the screen remained black. I was receiving notifications for text messages and emails, and the ringer to vibrate control was working.

Then iTunes prompted me to update the software on my iPhone, which I did.  The screen still would not turn on.  Also, at this point, my only options in iTunes is to "restore" from a back up which was before I got my iPhone 6 (presumably my last backup on my iPhone 4) or "set up new phone".  I am also not able to sycn or pull off the pictures by going through my PC vs. through iTunes. Since the screen is black and iTunes is not recognizing my iPhone, I cannot take any actions on my actual iPhone.

At this point, I really just want to get my pictures off of there before I do any more troubleshooting or tinkering.  Once my pictures are off, I would be fine with restoring my phone. I am pretty sure that I was not backing up via my iCloud because I had too many pictures so I disabled it (probably a bad idea in hindsight).

So, is there a way to get my pictures off of my phone when my screen is not working and the iPhone is not being recognized in iTunes?  If I "set up as new phone" will that erase the data, pics, etc. off my current phone?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!!

iPhone 6, null

If the phone is not being recognized by iTunes how did you do the other steps in your post? If it is recognized you could try importing the photos as the article below explains. If not, about your only option with a black screen is to take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

Thanks for the reply!  As to iTunes not recognizing my phone, I meant that it was not recognizing it as a currently registered device.  Our other devices show up as "Kimberlee's iPod", "So and So's iPhone", etc.  Right now my iPhone is just showing up as an iPhone with the option to either restore or setup as new.

Thanks for the articles!  I can try to import to my computer without using iTunes.  Do you know if I will still be able to do this without accepting the "trust this computer" prompt?  Since my screen is blank, I don't think I can do this.

    Thanks again!

If you have connected that iPhone to that computer before then it will not prompt you to trust it again. If you have not, then it will and of course you cannot reply without a working screen, sorryl

That's great to hear!  I have connected to that computer before, so hopefully the prompt will not show up. Thanks for your help!  Fingers crossed that I can at least get my pics off before I move on to the next issue (blank screen).
