Q: How do you download MPEG Streamclip Playback component

I downloaded MPEG Streamclip to my computer but it says I need to also download the Playback component but I can't seem to figure it out. I have the Utility MPEG 2 Component for Mountain Lion but my computer is running on Yosemite. When I try to download that, a message comes up that says "Please double-click the file QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg to open QuickTime MPEG2 disk image!" I am not sure what that means and don't know what to click. Is this how I download the Playback component for Yosemite or is there something else I need to do? Please help!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

You need to have purchased the MPEG-2 component for QuickTime Pro.

I've done so myself, years gone by (it was essential if you worked with creating DVDs), but can no longer find a working download link on the Apple website - can someone please help?

The following may (or may not) also apply to Yosemite:

If you are running Lion or later:

    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage

The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381

To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.

The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion and Mavericks even though they have it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

'The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.'

And here's the problem. There doesn't appear, at first blush, to be a way to download the MPEG-2 QT component any more from Apple.

That's correct; the MPEG-2 Playback Component  no longer available for download.

If you were going to use Streamclip to rip DVDs, suggest you look at Handbrake as an alternative. It's free and doesn't require additional software (though it lacks some of Streamclip's functionality).

    Good luck.

FYI, you should be able to copy the MPEG-2 component from your older system to the newer system – into /System/Library/QuickTime.

I am keeping an old Snow Leopard machine running for items like MPEG StreamClip which for various reasons would not be happy with newer versions of OS X. This also means I also have a machine still capable of running Rosetta for PowerPC apps.

It was difficult enough getting it working in Lion it becomes increasingly harder for newer and newer versions.

If you don't have the good fortune to have a working older machine to keep to one side - mine is an older MacBook Pro, then running Snow Leopard in a virtual machine would be an equally good solution.

Note: Converting from MPEG2 can be done other ways e.g. Handbrake, however sometimes you want to convert to MPEG2 or to demux or remux MPEG2 files, for these operations MPEG StreamClip is still useful.

PS. If you really want to scrape the barrel MPEG StreamClip is available for Windows but then it still needs both Apple QuickTime for Windows (discontinued but still available) and the QuickTime MPEG2 component for Windows (no longer available).

I tried this. I mounted my old Mac's HD and I can copy the component to the desktop, but not to the System\Library\QuickTime folder. Suggestions?

FWIW, I copied it from the root level to the QT folder.

    Good luck.
