Computer won't start,

My computer now starts in safe boot mode always and after that my password is declined. I recently upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7.5 from Mac OS X 10.7. The last software I ran before noticing this problem was ' a Audacity'. I have tried to verify permissions but my hard disk is not mounted. It is greyed out and the verify permission tab is greyed out too. Pls any help will be appreciated.Computer won't start

Thanks for commenting. I ran disk utility and the error message I get says ' incorrect number of thread records'. What does that mean? The computer will actually boot in safe mode and get to the screen where I am to put in my password, but when I put in my password it flickers and then nothing happens. I put in my password again and nothing still happens. Will appreciate any help from this forum.
