Sluggish Web Browsing experience, Why?

Hello everyone!

Background

I'm currently in the market toward buying a Power Mac G5 however I'm somewhat skeptical.

Right now I currently own a 17" with a 1.67 GHz processor - PowerBook G4.

Issue

Overall, Great machine, however it lags when it comes to internet browsing.

The browser -- whether it be TenFour (FireFox) or Safari -- scrolling up and/or down any web page, cause a visible "Chopping Lag" which is really annoying.

Question

1. PowerBook G4

  • Why does this happen?
  • 2. Future Purchase of Power Mac G5

  • Could this same issue occur with a Power Mac G5? If so, which models are more vulnerable to this issue and which are not?

  • Any and all answers provided would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks everyone!

    Hi Patrick,

Today's Internet is quite bloated compared to when G4s or even G5s were made.

For instance running 10..5 on my eMac, Safari is currently using 2.3 GB of RAM.

TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...

I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.

I love my G5 Quad, but before buying a PM G5 you might want to read this...
