Q: Convert Older Quicktime Files To Work With New Quicktime

Please .... surely .... there must be some kind of conversion program that can be used on those older files to make them compatible with the new app.

I have a lot of older files and I did download the legacy Quicktime app to view them but it's not just my own use I am concerned about.

What about the countless people who have uploaded files to the internet?  Myself included.

Some have uploaded hundreds.

(and I don't mean YouTube)

How can anyone expect every person who visits their content to have to download a second Quicktime app?

We all know that's simply not going to happen.

People will just move on.

Do the content owners really have to go back and redo all that work?

Please tell me there is a conversion app to make up for this lame and frustrating oversight on the part of Mother Apple.

Please forgive my placement of this query in the OS/X section.

I was unable to find a better location for it.

There was nothing for quicktime.

I have asked the moderators to move this post to the QuickTime discussion area.

    Yep.

Browser plugins are dead and the page code should be HTML 5 for your videos to work.

Thank you for your input but I won't consider this question answered until someone provides a satisfactory solution.

Redoing countless hours of work is not a solution.

Neither is forcing people to run two apps to do one thing.

There needs to be either a patch to the new app or a conversion app for the old files or a complete rewrite of the new app.

Legacy Quicktime is also a dead end and Apple has ended development of version 7.

Opening your older files with QuickTime X should be enough to convert them. Then all you need to do is edit your older page code for the new files.

There is no other fix for your problem. The same thing have happened to all of us that have older page code.

So, there is in fact an app that will convert the files?

I just searched the App Store.

Searching for "Quicktime X" returned no results.

Open one with QuickTime X and see for yourself.

If not there are dozens of other free apps your= can use.

You might have to lead me by the hand here.

I find no Quicktime X program on my machine.

I also do not find it in the Apple App Store.

Searching the term "Quicktime X", Google seems to lead me to various Quicktime 7 sites and also to some sites that are about Quicktime X "preferences".

I have not found any site directly related to learning about and/or downloading an app called Quicktime X.

Is Quicktime X just another name for version 7?

QuickTime Player version 10 is in your Applications folder.

I just right-clicked Quicktime Player and selected Get Info.

    I have version 10.4.

It is the reason I started this thread.

It's been telling me the file(s) cannot be played.

Then your files are even too old to be converted via Quicktime.

Try a third part converter like Any Video Converter Lite or others that can open your older video files.

I have tried to run the files in the past with Quicktime 10 and a dialogue box came up saying "Converting". The progress bar was not very encouraging but I waited anyway and at the end of that process it asked me where I wanted to export my converted file to.  I saved the file where I wanted to and then tried to run it.  The new file was not an AVI file like the old one had been but was now a MOV file with "(Converted)" in the file name.  No matter, as long as it works.  When I try to run it with Quicktime 7 as is recommended for older files, the motion plays but there is no audio.  Not good considering these are all live musical performances.  When I try to run the new "converted" file with Quicktime 10.4 nothing happens at all.  The "play" icon turns to a "pause" icon indicating the file is playing but there is no motion and no sound.  I have waited as much as 10 minutes for the file to play before closing the Quicktime app.

"Get Info" tells me the original AVI file I am most interested in running right now was created in November of 2012, which sounds about right.  It is about 273 Mb.  The new and improved MOV file created by Quicktime 10 is slightly smaller at 257 Mb but it is equally useless.  I have tried this process on several of my files with the same lack of success.

So, I think without knowing it, I was actually already doing what you recommended.

I will look around for the other converter you mentioned.

Quicktime Player 7 was only able to handle a few AVI codecs and most were converted QuickTime by the old Flip4Mac third party software.

If most of your files are AVI then they were never Quicktime formats to begin with and Windows viewers to your web page never saw them.

MPEG Streamclip is another converter your should try.

Microsoft created AVI about 25 years ago and abandoned it about 10 years ago (or longer). No one except video pirates still uses the container.

    Very interesting.

I assume you mean what I think you mean ... that AVI was a file format primarily used by people illegally acquiring video.

    Ripping from DVD I presume.

That is not the case here.

I honestly don't think the camera was 25 years old.

I think it was a fairly nice Sony from maybe a dozen years ago or so but I don't know for sure.

We hired a guy for a few months.

He shot our stuff and sold us the files.

    Moving forward:

I prefer, whenever possible, to get my software from the Apple App Store.

I like the idea that my iTunes account has a record of the sale, that it's there for re-installation if neccessary and that the vendor has a harder time just up and leaving you stranded.

I have searched "AVI Converter" and found an app with that exact name by iFunia.

I will do a search for reviews on it.

    Thank you for your time.

    I appreciate it.

Your older Sony camera used the AVI container because they didn't have to pay any money to use it. Simple logic.

    Good luck.
