Q: how can i use a Sony Blue ray player on my Macbook Pro

I have a Sony Blue ray player with HDMI and i wanted to watch a movie on my mac, but whenever I use my HDMI port on my computer the device is an empty file and video player cannot display the dvd player.  know there are adapters for HDMI to thunderbolt, but why can't I use my pre existing HDMI port?

anyhow, if anyone could help that would be awesome.
