Unfortunately, this message appears when Time Machine detects that your backups have become corrupted. When this occurs, Time Machine will erase your existing backups and start over again with a new "master" backup. So, if you saw this message a couple of days ago, your current backups will only be over the last few days.

Unfortunately again, Apple does not know why the corruption issues occur, so there is no assurance that the message may appear again at any time in the future. The problem is much more likely to occur with backups on a Time Capsule than it is on a USB hard drive that is connected directly to a Mac.

For that reason, I would suggest that you adopt a dual back up strategy with backups going to both the Time Capsule and the USB hard drive.

There is more information about this perplexing issue in the link below. It is difficult to say how many users have been affected by these corruption issues, but whatever that percentage might be, it is far too high.

I didn't get the message - but my time machine was corrupted last November & could not go back past that day although I could see the sub folders in time machine.

The problem appears to have happened when My Time Machine drive was a tad over 50% full (mine also went back to 2012)

In the end had to turn off time machine backups - and erase the drive. I partitioned the time machine drive and restarted time machine in one partition. At some point will stop backing up to that partition and move to the other one.

It may have something to do with Spotlight/Finder indexing -- as I don't use that search anyway - I put all my drives in the private area.

It may be that Time Machine can get too strung out to keep its pointers correct for time periods.

No, it does not. I now suspect that the Time Machine software itself on your Mac is having problems, and since Time Machine is unfortunately part of the Mac operating system, the only potential solution would be to wipe your Mac and reinstall the operating system.

I suggest that you post in the support forum for the operating system that is currently installed on your Mac for advice from the operating system experts. Click on the link below, then select the operating system that you are using on your Mac. Good luck!
