Q: Updated to https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT206567 and cannot now access iTune, iMessage or FaceTime using AppleID on updated machine.  If I enter correct password I get "An error occurred during authentication"

Updated to https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT206567 and https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT2062 cannot now access iTune, Messages or FaceTime using AppleID on updated iMac.

If I enter correct password I get "An error occurred during authentication"

If I enter a wrong password I get "Your Apple ID or password was incorrect."

I can use my macbook pro and iPhone to access iTunes, etc with the same Apple ID

I have tried:

(1) deleting and recreating my keychain

(2) confirming I can go to iCloud.com and log on with my AppleID from the upgrade diMac and that works

(3) reset the NVRAM

(3) logged on as guest and still cannot access iTunes (etc)

(4) created a new administrator account and still cannot access iTunes (etc)

(5) reset my AppleID and no change

(6) booted the computer in safe mode and still cannot access iTunes (etc)

(7) Moved the "com.apple.iChat", "com.apple.imagent", and "com.apple.imservice" preferences to a new folder on my desktop, then restarted Messages and tried to log in again and no luck, same error

(8) I have checked my local host file and it is still at the factory default

(9) I have checked my date and time is set to automatic update

(10) I have done an integrity and file permission check on the hard disk

(11) I have checked that the back-end services are function using Apple's online status page

Any ideas??

Cheers

Douglas

    Hi,

Since OS X 10.8.2 and Messages 7.0.1 it has been required that the Mac's Serial Number is present on the Logic/Mother board.

It can get missed in Repair or Refurbishment.

However separate from that the iMessages Server can also block the Apple ID from the Mac's use of that ID.

Because of the Serial Number it becomes Device Specific.

You seems to have done everything else.

If the Serial Number is present  AND this is not a recently migrate Mac User Account with Keychain then this is the only solution

Re: iMessage not working from OS X

On the basis you have triad Other Mac User accounts it is more likely to be the Mac's use of the Apple ID that is blocked rather than anything about the Mac user Account.

This one causes a reset of the account on the Mac com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist

It removes the Apple ID and Alternatives that are currently listed in the iMessages account pane.

Having said that it is strange that iTunes as well is involved and that sounds like a more general issue with the ID  as compared with just iMessages and some bleed over to FaceTime.
