What is the meaning of "GPU Hardware VM is disabled (multispace: disabled, page table updates with DMA: disabled)"

When booting a MacBookPro (early 2011) into Yosemite (10.10.5) the following message appears in verbose boot:

** GPU Hardware VM is disabled (multispace: disabled, page table updates with DMA: disabled)

The affected machine had the known GPU defect and its logic board replaced.

The message above appeared after the unit was repaired.

Booting into Mavericks seems to avoid this.

Now I want to know what exactly that means:

1. Is this a sign of further problems down the line?

2. Or this actually a part of the 'solution'? Meaning that Apple intentionally disabled some functionality of the graphics chip form 10.10 onwards to avoid the burnout.

Searching the net for answers only revealed a couple of worried users with this problem or seemingly unrelated other problems where this line happens to be included in the logs.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)
