Q: syncing contacts

New iphone 5S. (First iPhone) Trying to sync contacts through iTunes but not a single contact appears. Indeed I'm guessing the sync is working since even ones I put in manually are erased post syncing. What am I failing to do / what am I doing wrong. Everything happens as the instructions says it should but nothing is in the contacts at the end. I am trying only contacts. Please help. Macbook pro with Mountain Lion.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Try using iCloud

On the Mac - check to sync the contacts to iCloud

On the phone - settings - iCloud - contacts - toggle to ON

Have you added an email account yet? Are you trying to add the email contacts to your phone? If so go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, > Select your mail account > and make sure that Contacts is set to ON.

Also open the Contacts App, click on Groups at the upper left and make sure all selected.

Yes I have added my gmail account. I was hoping to move all the info in my Contacts file on the computer to the phone as I am transferring from an Android and moved all my cell phone contacts to the Macbook thinking it would then be a simple hop to the iPhone. Seems not! Thank you for your suggestion. However I got as far as selecting my mail account but there was no 'Contacts' in the next window to set on or off. Next window had 'account' and under that Mail (set to on) and Notes (set to off) and delete account below.  Also I do not see 'Groups' in upper left of the Contacts app. At the top is written All Contacts and on the right is the + sign for adding contacts. Nothing more. Any explanation? iPhone is 5S v. 9.3.2

Thanks to all for help. Contacts are on phone but don't know how they got there as I had left phone and comp next to each other but closed while I went for lunch and on return all contacts had appeared. Weird!  I think it may have happened through Airdrop although this is not apparently supposed to work with old comps running Mountain Lion.  Maybe through iCloud.  Whatever - the problem is solved for now!

    One of two things

If you used iCloud - the sync may have gone through (takes a little time)

If you used Gmail - that also uses the internet to sync your contacts from the web account - same explanation

In any case - glad that your problem is solved

Airdrop did not do it but iCloud probably did if you have Contacts enabled under Settings, iCloud, Contacts.

    Glad is working now!...
