Q: icloud

I do not wish to use iCloud for back up but its beginning to look as though this may be the only way to get my contacts onto a new iPhone 5S from my Macbook pro Mountain Lion system (10.8.5). However when I open iCloud from system preferences it has a number of other boxes clicked including documents and data. When I try to unclick this I am given the choice either to cancel or to delete all the documents and data from my Mac. This seemed incredible but when I tried unclicking calendar and reminders the same thing happened and when I chose the delete button, indeed they did all disappear.  So this is not a risk I wish to take with my data. So first question is what is going on here?  Second is how do I transfer my contacts to the iPhone. I have clicked the boxes and synced through iTunes but the contact file remains empty on the phone. Indeed becomes empty - after syncing any hand-entered numbers have disappeared.  I am a total newcomer to iPhone and it is driving me a bit crazy. Was a big Apple fan but to make a phone that will not bluetooth with my old Android, nor it seems with my macbook seems quite outrageous.

When you were syncing with iTunes, was the iPhone attached to the computer using a USB cord?

Yes the phone was attached with the usb cord.  clearly some conversation is happening between comp and phone as any contacts on the phone are erased by the syncing.  But my main worry is about the comp and iCloud and why I only have the option of including all the documents and data or having it deleted from my computers.

I believe what happening when you click those boxes is removing them from the computer, but not deleting the info altogether. For instance, if you log into iCloud.com and check for calendars and reminders, they're likely there. It can certainly be intimidating when you're new to all of this.

To move info over from Android you may want to use this article, as you cannot pair the devices with Bluetooth.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apple.movetoios&hl=en

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/switch-to-iphone/

As far as syncing things between the computer and phone, iCloud will be your best friend. Make sure you're signed into both devices with the same AppleID and that you have all the features turned on that you'd like to use. Make sure the feature is on for both devices for that matter.

You can still do it the traditional way using iTunes and the power cord, but I would encourage you to move beyond that.

iCloud has many features for backing up and syncing data, and once configured is pretty worry free.

Reply with any questions you have, and good luck!

I hadn't tried it until now, but I'm not able to pair my iPhone with my Mac computer through Bluetooth either.

I can setup a personal hotspot on the phone, and join it with the computer, but that's about it.

And as I mentioned you cannot pair two phones together with bluetooth that I'm aware of.

If you'd used Android Beam, Apple offers something similar called Airdrop that may a good feature for you. It works between computer:phone, or phone:phone, etc

Re believing it is "not deleting the info altogether' . That sounds too risky to me. As far as I'm aware I have not used iCloud - I have no confidence in automated back-ups and much prefer to keep it under my control where I know what is what. Too much discussion in these support groups of people losing stuff thanks to iCloud. Why should iCloud delete stuff on my computer anyway. Especially when I don't think it is up there anyway.  "Intimidating" is an understatement. I'm downright scared and going crazy!  So much for Apple's everything designed to be easy including switching. Uhuh.

So please tell me how to do it the "traditional way". I fear I am a traditionalist and best to go this way.  I looked at the Move to iOS app but seems it only works when you first set up the iPhone so may be late for this unless I go right back to factory setting which I prefer as last resort.  I really never thought moving contacts from a macbook to an iphone could be so hard.  And am I correct in thinking Airdrop will not work with Mountain Lion?  Seems that way - least iPhone does not recognise it. Very grateful if you can tell me traditional way if that works. Thanks

Actually I find my mac book does seem to have airdrop facility but although I have set the phone to airdrop 'everyone', and it is sitting next to the computer, it does not show up on my macbook. Why is this?

iTunes 11 for Mac: Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad

This is going to the article for you then.

As for the 'Move to iOS' app, yes it requires that the iPhone be in the setup assistant.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it doesn't take too long to just wipe the phone and start over.

As for Airdrop, this is the relevant portion of the article I posted earlier. I would suggest checking the Security and Privacy preferences listed in the 3rd bullet point. Good luck!

    Tips for sending items

If you don't see the recipient in the AirDrop window or sheet:

    • Make sure that both devices have AirDrop turned on and are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other.
    • If you're sending to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
      • Your Mac needs to be a 2012 or newer model with OS X Yosemite or later.
      • The iOS device must be using iOS 7 or later and have Personal Hotspot turned off in Settings > Cellular.
    • If you're sending to a Mac:
      • If the receiving Mac is using OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion, it needs to have an AirDrop window open: choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder.
      • If the receiving Mac is a 2012 or older model, click “Don't see who you're looking for?” in the AirDrop window or sharing sheet of the sending Mac. Then click “Search for an Older Mac.”
      • Find out if the Mac has “Block all incoming connections” turned on in Security & Privacy preferences. A Mac won't receive items using AirDrop if this setting is turned on.
    • If AirDrop on the receiving device is set up to receive items from contacts only, make sure that both devices are signed in to iCloud. Also make sure that the email address or phone number associated with your Apple ID is in the Contacts app of the receiving device.

Well. I am really grateful for your help which in a roundabout way I think has solved the issue. Say think as actually still not sure how it worked but I now have all the contacts on my phone as desired and I am guessing it must have worked through Airdrop although having only Mountain Lion I thought this was not possible. But thanks to your post I had explored it further and managed to open Airdrop and share the contact folder. I did this even though the iPhone did NOT show my Macbook and indeed everywhere I read Mountain Lion has Airdrop but cannot link with iPhones. Nothing happened with this so I gave up and went off for lunch etc with comp and phone closed. When I return Surprise surprise! I find all the contacts on the phone. all a bit of a mystery which is slightly worry as I fear another sync through itunes may wipe them again and I won't know how to return them! Meanwhile I am off and finally enjoying the iPhone experience.  As my friend says, maybe I just need more patience and not expect everything to happen in a flash. Anyway I am most grateful for this support and to all you kind people who replied so helpfully. Now I just have to figure how to avoid iCloud! Although - second thought - maybe it was through iCloud the transfer happened...

Did you sign in to iCloud on your new phone? From your original description, your Mac was definitely syncing with iCloud. You indicated that you opened iCloud in System Preferences, and the various boxes (Contacts, Notes, Calendars, Reminders, etc.) were checked. This means that you Mac was syncing that data with iCloud.

An iCloud backup is an entirely different thing. An iCloud backup is done only for your devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod). When you create a backup of one of your devices, it backs up what you have selected for it to back up (on the device, not the Mac). Backups are used when you need to restore your device after it has been erased for one reason or another, or to set up a new device, if you do not want to manually download your apps and media, and you want the Settings on the new device to be identical to the Settings on the old device.

iCloud sync is a real-time ongoing process that syncs any data housed on your device or Mac (that are signed into the same iCloud account) to iCloud. So, iCloud is the "holding facility" for that information. iCloud then pushes that info to each device or Mac that is signed in to that same iCloud account and that has those same options selected for sync.

So, when you unchecked "Calendars" it said it would remove the Calendars from your Mac, because those Calendars are housed in iCloud and sync'd to the Mac from iCloud. Once you re-checked it, they were all pushed back to the Mac.

You can see the contents of your iCloud information by going to iCloud.com on your Mac, and sign in with the Apple/iCloud ID that is signed into your iCloud account. You can then click on any of the options (Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc.) to see what is in iCloud for those items.

If you do not sign into iCloud on your device, then you would be setting up all of that infor on the device only, and you would retrieve it by doing a backup to iTunes, making sure that the Settings tab for your device in iTunes did not have iCloud checked for those items.

But the easiest thing to do is to set up the iCloud sync. That way, when you add a contact to your Mac, it shows up on your phone and vice versa. When you sign out of iCloud on your device or Mac, it does say that it will delete that info from the device or Mac that you are signing out of, but it is retained in iCloud. So the next time you sign back in to iCloud on that device or Mac, it is all pushed back from iCloud.

    Best of luck,

Gail from Maine, I love you. such a helpful reply and exactly what a newbie, find it hard to keep up with all the new technology person like me required. Pre-empted the last message I sent just before yours arrived. I did not think I had signed into iCloud but perhaps it is automatic? Until today, following your suggestion, I have never logged into iCloud from my Macbook pro (my only device until now). Yet indeed I found that my calendar and contacts are all there. How has this happened without my being aware? So yes it seems the calendar is perhaps entirely housed in iCloud and not on my computer., tho I have no idea how/why. But I did not see Documents and Data so why that message... 'Excuse a maybe dumb question but still struggling a bit to understand what has happened/how it works. If it is on my computer first, does this get erased if/when it goes to iCloud? Surely not. But then why would things disappear on my computer if turned off in iCloud? I can see it is a brilliant system for backup but until I get the hang of it I prefer taking my own physical back-ups. Least that way I know what is where. But your message gives me some confidence that I may one day reach enough understanding to use it! Thank you.
