The (built-in) Activity app does not presently offer a watch face complication for displaying daily distance data on the watch face (ie when viewing the time).
To view your distance for the day via the Activity app:
- When viewing the time on your watch, tap on the Activity rings complication, or;
- Go the Home screen (via a single press of the Digital Crown) > tap on the Activity app icon (coloured rings).
When viewing the progress rings, swipe up on the screen > your total distance for the day is shown (along with steps).

May 27, 2016 12:18 PM in response to Gperrymobileby Jonathan UK,If you would like to add daily distance as a watch face complication, you may find that some third-party apps meet your needs.
For example, Pedometer++ integrates with the Health app and offers watch face complications:

Help here > Use the Workout app on your Apple Watch
The Workout app neither records nor displays total daily distance (on the watch face or elsewhere).
It instead records and displays the results of specific workouts that are recorded via the app.
If you would like to suggest that Apple considers adding additional watch face complications for the Activity app (referenced in my earlier reply), you can do so here:
