Spotlight works OK when I use it in the middle of the screen. (I hate this new feature). But when I try to search from a finder window, which I prefer, it will only return .xlsx files. I have looked at spotlight preferences and privacy settings and nothing is amiss there. Any thoughts?

No idea about de xlsx limitation, but you can drag the Spotlight window wherever you want. It doesn't have to be in the middle of your screen. 🙂
Can you explain how you are searching in the Finder window? What type of information are you searching for and do you select a search token when offered?
With my limited testing, I don't seem to see anything that would restrict it only to xlsx files unless that is what I search for.
I may have some thoughts but I have no idea what you mean when you say a Finder search only returns .xlsx files.

What is your search criteria, i.e. what are you searching for?

Thanks. I hate the whole new spotlight function. I like using keyboard shortcuts, but it seems I have to use the cursor to hit search, even when it autocompletes what I am typing with the name of the doc I am looking for. Although, maybe if I hit the right arrow, it selects it. Or is there another way to go about that?
You guys, thanks for all the thoughts! So I often search for a file called "important numbers." It'll show up in spotlight, but as I mentioned, I hate the new spotlight and would rather use the finder. When I select "show all in finder" it shows me only excel files. I do not know what a search token is. Here is a screen shot of the finder window:
