If I'm not a member of Apple Music (yet) nor a user of iTunes Match, am I able to add a playlist or a song to My Music?
4th Generation Apple TV installed with 64GB storage; mid 2007 iMac and iPad 2 with current iOS. Just not highly conversant with how the various devices and apps interrelate.

No, My Music uses Apple Music or iTunes Match. You should be able to access your purchased media on the device without using playlists, or the playlists on your Mac when iTunes is running via the Computers app on the Apple TV.

Thank you, Turingtest. In the meantime I did conclude from what I read that I'd need to subscribe to iTunes Match and have done so. I'm particularly interested in running a certain playlist as such from my iPad, so it's clear that Match was necessary. In fact, as I write, I'm playing most glorious classical 'songs' through a Bluetooth connection to my hearing aids. Triumph.
