Q: Factory unlocked iphone 6s giving sim not supported error

Hey guys

I recently bought a new Factory unlocked iphone 6s from Newyork,and didnt use it in the states.Now i am back in my country Pakistan and it doesnt seem to recognize the sim i inserted even though it supports an iphone officially.It gives the same error as below as in the phone itself.I called apple care and they said to restore and update it by hard resetting it,which after hitting a few tries still didnt work.

would really appreciate some help

thanks

    If you restore it as new - then you should see this image - 2016-05-13_09-04-31.jpg

    If you are not seeing that image - then the phone is not unlocked - contact Apple Care and request them to check which carrier it is locked to

    Called apple support on Friday and they asked me the IMEI and then proceeded to guide me to restore it.If it was carrier locked they would have mentioned it,which they did not.I restored it quite a few times now,but to no avail.Will have to wait till monday to call them again to check whats the problem.My dad actually bought the phone from a re seller in newyork and he specifically told him that its the Factory unlocked "sim free" version.

    thanks for the support though guys,any sort of help is appreciated at this moment.

    It is irrelevant what the seller said. The phone is not unlocked. The fact that you restored it and it's still locked points to this. You can call apple again and they will tell you to what carrier the phone is locked to. Apple will not unlock the phone; only the carrier it is locked to can unlock it.

    And sim-free is NOT unlocked. moSt sim free iPhones will lock to the carrier that is used  to first activate the phone.

    @felipeV

    so assuming its locked by AT&T i will have to contact them to unlock it? I though factory unlocked phones could instantly be used right out of the box because i remember my uncle buying an iphone 6 last year and all he did was plug in his sim and the phone started working,are there versions of factory unlocked phones or is it that this phone was used prior to purchase and i have been scammed by the retailer.

    Correct. And usually that means you have to be a customer in good standing with ATT in order for them to unlock it for you.

    They can (and the term "factory unlocked" does not exist in the AppleUniverse).He probably bought it at an Apple Store (online or physical store) which is the only source of unlocked phones. OR he got it from a third party store like CarPhoneWarehouse in the UK which sells sim-free phones which will lock to the carrier of the SIM used to first activate the phone.

    My guess is that your phone was bought from a carrier, in which case it was locked from the outset. OR the phone was used (sim-free). Call Apple,; if they confirm that the phone is locked to a carrier, you have been scammed.

    SIM free could merely mean the middle man removed the SIM card and re sold it

    SIM free does not always equate to unlocked
