Can I display my photos with a black border?

Photos for Mac in Full Screen mode has still the white background, that is too bright to view he colors properly.

In full Screen Mode the enlarged photo looks like this:

Browse your album in Edit mode. The sidebar will show the photos on a black background. It is the closest to what os currently possible in Photos.

You can step the sidebar with the arrow keys while viewing them on a black background enlarged.

And then it will be not possible to navigate the library conveniently. Full screen mode alone is already bad enough and much too limiting. 😠

But even without the sidebar the background remains white in Full Screen Mode, unless in Edit mode.

o.k. 😁 if you remove the last remnants of navigation tools, full screen mode will show a black background when enlarging a photo.

But it is the same display as I can have in Edit mode, without sacrificing the toolbar and sidebar.

I was hoping to be able to have the blank border as I browse through the pictures before and after I edit them.

You can use the Edit view for browsing, even if you do not want to edit. Select the album you want to browse, enlarge the first photo, hit the spacebar and use the arrow keys to advance between the photos, while using the sidebar to know where you are in the album.

I am browsing my photos only this way. The white background is reducing the contrast of the photos.
