In an FCE sequence, is there any way to get a text file display of the sequences clips? There is a text file display for clips (cmd-9). Zooming the time-line cancels the ability to see the entire sequence in the time line. more

May 28, 2016 9:44 AM in response to mrblby Russ H,In Final Cut Pro 7 you can use the Edit > Find command to do a search on used clips in the sequence. See if there is an equivalent command in FCE. Unfortunately, I can't determine that first hand on my system. (Also, if you're ever interested considering FCP X, it has something called the Timeline Index which provides quick access to a list of clips, markers, effects, etc.)
Good luck.

FCE 4.0.1 does have the equivalent, but either of these is just a Find routine, with no chance a "select all" option to allow me to view the entire set of clips in a sequence, in a separate text report.

I would consider it, but the timing is wrong. A few weeks back, I decided it was time to move for iMovie 6.0.3, either to a copy of FCE 4.0 (already had, but too complicated for me to use) or FCP X (to see whether it was any easier). I DLed the demo (and started its 30-day trial). In the meantime, my difficulty with FCE cleared up, and I'm off and running with that, leaving the trial to expire. I've also heard that FCP X doesn't import FCE projects. So the situation now is that to find out whether FCP's Timeline Index is valuable enough to me to,1.) buy FCP without demo and 2.) restart current projects from scratch, although I could probably reconstruct them using exported QT files. (As I remember when setting up an El Capitan volume in this laptop, the legacy QT 7 still works.
Thanks for your suggestion, Russ.

May 29, 2016 5:02 AM in response to mrblby Russ H,So it doesn't allow you to select the sequence and then use the Find command to show a list of used clips, etc?
There actually is a workaround for opening FCE projects in FCP X, but to do it, you would need access to FCP 6 or 7 as well as third party app (7toX @$19).
The TL Index in FCP X is pretty sweet, but for sure there is bit of a learning curve in moving from track-based editing to clip-based editing. One advantage of X is it supports a far greater choice of modern formats than FCE or iMovie 6.
You are correct that QT 7 installs and runs on 10.11.

No. The Find command works similarly to Find/Replace in text editors. It won't execute until you've given it a term to search for. What it does is to take you to the bin location of the original clip.

I bought FCE v2 and then ungraded to v4. (I still have both installation discs.) As I work more with v4, I'll keep track of what FCP X would give me. At at certain point, I'll hit the tipping point.
Thanks again for all your pointers.
