May 28, 2016 11:13 AM in response to dapacarterby Lexiepex,The advice of AE should do it normally.
You can try this:
shutdown the mac, startup while holding the Shift key, hold until the progress bar is about halfway, it is very slow, login, then try to empty the Trash.
After that restart normal.

May 28, 2016 1:34 PM in response to dapacarterby macjack,You can check with MalwareBytes. Malwarebytes was developed by one of our own colleagues here in ASC. It gets rave reviews and is about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac.Stay away from programs that purport to "clean your Mac". They can do damage to your system.
A Mac can pick up malware but not if you just use common sense. You really have to actively invite some malware in for it to happen. That means downloading and knowingly giving your password for it to download. Mac provides all the protection you need with SIP (System Integrity Protection).I About System Integrity Protection on your Mac - Apple Support
Safari pop-ups are different and easier to deal with. In Safari 9.1 and later just close the window. For earlier versions force quit and hold the shift key while restarting Safari.

May 28, 2016 1:34 PM in response to dapacarterby Lexiepex, you said: Plus what would you suggest I use to clean the iMac from top to bottom and to check for any viruses?
Who said that? certainly not me...
If you issue is solved, then start a new thread with the issues you have now. post the link to that thread here, so that we find you fast.
Do not start "cleaning" or searching for virus yourself, that can be very counterproductive...

May 29, 2016 12:53 AM in response to dapacarterby Lexiepex,Is that the same name as your Home folder?
If so, and when it is not your Home folder, move them from the Trash to the Desktop and rename them.

May 29, 2016 7:50 AM in response to dapacarterby Lexiepex,The Home folder is here: Open Finder from the Dock, in Finder click the name of your Startup disk (normally 'MacintoshHD'), on the right side click the "Users" folder to open it, in there you see a folder with a house (Home) as icon: that is your Home folder. It should be also in the left navigation panel of the Finder.
Is the name of the Home folder Jason Mraz ?
Answer this question first, before we go on.

I have 4 folders in the trash can - there is nothing within any of the folders - however these folders will not delete
