Why won't Safari 9.1.1. play trailers on Apple.com?

It just sits there doing nothing. I updated Java but this is a repeating issue. Also, it will NEVER play anything from NBC.com and perhaps others. This problem is for all recent versions or updates on safari. I often go to Firefox for proper function. Similar issues to this are continuous with my 2012 imac and Mac mini's and Safari.
I have checked global settings on flash etc. WTH? I have had problems like this with Safari constantly.
If this is how it is then can anyone recommend a safe and stable browser to replace Safari?

OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

9.1.1 is a beta version of Safari. This is not the correct venue for discussing beta software from Apple.

If you are having problems with Safari on your computers, then most likely it is due to problems with your OS X systems. Might I encourage you to do the following. And, yes, I know it takes a while and can be an aggravation.

  1. Make a backup of both computers.
  2. One at a time erase the startup disk.
  3. Install a fresh copy of OS X.
  4. Test the installed Safari to see if the problem is fixed.
  5. Remember, if the sites you use require installing Flash, then you will need to do that before testing.

Install Lion Through Mavericks from Scratch

Be sure you backup your files.

  1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Apple logo appears. Wait for the Utility Menu to appear.
  2. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  3. After Disk Utility loads select the volume (this is the indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the side list. Click on the Erase tab in Disk Utility's main window.
  4. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button
  5. When the process has completed quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  6. SelectReinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

This will install the version of OS X you had installed.

If all is well, then you can restore your data from the backup. Do not restore any system software, preference files, etc. from the backup because that my will be why you had problems. If you wish to restore third-party software then be sure to do so from original media or new downloads to avoid possible conflicts. See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Same issue here. And no, Safari 9.1.1 is NOT a Beta version as the other poster theratter said above.

Do not erase your drive and re-install, that is silly. Safari is an application, not an OS dependancy.

Trailers do not play, at all. Would love to know what the issue is. Seems that the issue is either due to a plug in issue or some problem on the site.

I even did all the standard updates, but still no joy.

In your first post to the OP, you instructed the OP to re-image the machine with a fresh OS.

Yes, you did instruct them to do that in your post here:

There's no reason to do that. In only very extreme cases of kernel corruption or a lot of errors should a re-image be done.

Second, Safari Version 9.1.1 (9537.86.6.17) on 10.9.5 is the stable release version, not a beta. I'm not sure where you got the information from. Please cite a valid current source if you believe I'm incorrect. Apple does not release "Beta" fixes with "Current" Software Updates.

Third, the issue with Trailers from Apple and some other content is NOT playing at all in the above referenced Safari Version (again, a current release).

It's not a plug-in issue that I can identify either.

What would helpful in future posts is if we actually analyzed the issue at hand and determined why the issue exists and what should be done about it. Asking users to simply just reformat and image machines isn't really a practical solution.

This is the first time I post anything on the forums, so I apologize in advance for my ignorance. I'm having the same problem, but it extends to Google Chrome (the only other browser I have). It's not the usual screen for the trailers, only this one. Clicking on the image doesn't do anything. And there is a little diagonal white dash to the right that when I press on it, it gets bigger, but it doesn't do anything.

How about a collective deep breath here.I don't think it is a Safari 9 issue.

After reading this thread I verified that:

  • I cannot play trailers on Safari 9.1.1 (updated May 16 with 10.11.5)
  • I tried from another Mac running Safari 8.0.8 and have the same results.
  • They do not play on FireFox 46.0.1
  • They do not play on SeaMonkey 2.40 either.

So Apple Trailers are having a bad hair day, not Safari. Always check with different browsers.
