iCloud for windows has stopped working - no data showing. Has anyone else experienced this? Found a fix?

I recently upgraded to a Windows 10 laptop and have had problems with iCloud. I cannot access photos at all - old Windows 7 hard drive accesses as before, except all my original photos (not Photostream - in folders) seem to have been deleted but it is now uploading Photostream from when I activated my new laptop but only back to June 2015. However, other data seems OK - contacts, calendar, notes etc.

Whenever i sign into icloud on my desktop I get the error "Icloud has stopped working" Then shuts down.......
