I have an iPad already and recently replaced my sons' iPad with an iPad mini. I now have an extra iPad and was thinking that I could keep it for myself. Is it possible to have 2 iPads using the same apple id and password? Thank you.

But you have to think of the consequences:
All Apple services will be shared using the same Apple ID: iMessage, FaceTime, Game Centre, iCloud, Apps, Music.
Will be better if your your son uses a different Apple ID.

Yes, you can use the same Apple ID on multiple devices. As an added bonus the two devices will be synced, so you'll be able to use either one at any time.
The worst thing that a single user can do is have multiple Apple IDs.
