Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)

How long should you press shift key for? when it got to screen asking to reset passwordI had to enter password but then computer switched off again

May 29, 2016 8:54 AM in response to hairpull1by macjack,Release the Shift key when you see the Apple Logo. But Safe Mode also failed to boot. So, I'd suggest starting up from your Recovery partition by holding command + r keys and reinstall OS X.
