Q: cannot import photos from icloud or iphone to my iMac even w a usb cable.

I have the latest iOS 9.3.2 as well as the latest El Capitan 10.11.4 on my iMac. When I connect my iPhone via USB cable and try to import my photos, none of the photos show up to be imported. I can see in iCloud.com that the photos are syncing between my phone and the cloud. I just need to save my photos on my iMac and when I try to import none of the pictures show up to be imported.

If you are using iCloud Photos Library you do not import using USB - in the Photos iCLoud preferences what is the iCloud Photo Library setting and status

Thank you.  My iCloud Photo Library is turned on within my settings - it says it is uploading items.  I also have "Download Originals to this Mac" selected.  My Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing are also turned on.

Photos are not downloaded from iCloud Photo Library until the upload is complete

It isn't changing if at all, but it does seem to be making some progress based on the latest screen shot - just has a long way to goScreen Shot 2016-05-29 at 2.28.34 PM.png

I saw some other posts and your responses so it may be that I need to stop messing with it and let it completely upload.  I am sure I hosed up the process somewhat in trying to sort it out last night. Is this a new change?  I don't recall having this issue prior to updating my iOS version.

I take that back - it has totally reset as of this morning so negative progress.  I just want to back up my pictures on my iMac so I can delete them from my phone.  Appreciate any help to understand what I am doing wrong here.

You are chasing a unicorn - if you use iCloud Photos library you never delete photos any place as when you do they are deleted every place - the entire purpose of ICPL is to keep all libraries identical - with ICPL you use optimized photos on devices with limited storage

what changes have you made recently? resetting is usually the result of user action of some sort including rebuilding the library, moving the library, turning ICPL off and back on. or other user actions

Your first step is to decide what you want and then set it up and let it finish undistirubed

    and as to this

Appreciate any help to understand what I am doing wrong here.

You have not told us what you are doing - only what is wrong - since we can not see you you have to tell us exactly what you have, what you are doing and what is happening
