Airport Express not connecting to WiFi!

My Airport Express lost its connection to WiFi and cannot reconnect, keeps flashing yellow!

Its only used to stream music from my iPad and not connected via ethernet. Its been working fine for 2 years until it lost connection to my iPad because I took the iPad out of WiFi range. Now I cannot get the Airport to connect to WiFi again.

I have tried resetting by holding the reset button down 20 sec, also tried turning power off and holding the reset button while switching power on again, however nothing helps. Any ideas?

Please try the following steps

  • Power on the AirPort Express for a few minutes
  • Hold in the reset button for 7 to 8 seconds, and then release
  • Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status

The Express has now been reset back to default settings, so that it can be set up again to "join" your wireless network

  • On the iPad....go to the Home Screen
  • Tap Settings (gear icon)
  • Tap WiFi
  • Look for a listing of Set Up New Base Station
  • Tap on AirPort Express just below that listing

When you tap on AirPort Express, the setup "wizard" will open up and take a few seconds to analyze the network there, and then suggest that the Express be configured to "Join" the existing wireless network there. In the example below, an AirPort Express will be set up to join a network named 2WIRE902. You will see the name of your wireless network on your screen.

  • Type in a name that you want to call the AirPort Express,
  • Type in the password for the wireless network, and Verify again.
  • Tap Next and the wizard will set up the Express for you, assuming that it is operating correctly.

This sounds like you have an older version of the AirPort Express with only one Ethernet port on the device, correct?

Please look carefully on the side of the AirPort Express to locate the model number. It is hard to see, so you may need good lighting and reading glasses to see it clearly. The model number starts with an "A" followed by 4 numbers.

An example might be A1264 or A1084.

There are two possibilities that would explain why AirPort Utility cannot configure your old AirPort Express. We can narrow that down to one when we have the model number of your AirPort Express.

Apple dropped support of the older A1084 model about 4 years ago, so any Mac that is using a more recent 6.x version of AirPort Utility or an iOS device like the iPhone or iPad, will not be able to set up the older Express.

But, if you still have a Mac running an older operating system like Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or a PC that has AirPort Utility for Windows installed on the device....or, you could borrow one for 10-15 minutes, the older A1084 Express could be configured that way, and will work with newer products on the network.
