Q: how can i access my mac mini from my iMac both 2008 or earlier

I have an iMac 2008 and I want to use my older mac mini as an external hard drive. How can I access my files, what kind of cable do I need?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), never saw this message in the past

You need a FireWire cable. Start up the Mac mini with the T key held down.

I have no keyboard or a monitor for the mini. what do I need to do? I would like to clean off the mini and use it for storage as an external device. I want to get rid of some of my iMac files.

First with a monitor, mouse and KB connected to the Mini setup File Sharing
How to connect with File Sharing on your Mac - Apple Support
Then you can just boot the Mini w/o monitor, KB and mouse and share files

Get one and see what I wrote above; you can move the keyboard from the iMac to it temporarily. Using File Sharing would require leaving the OS on the Mac mini and getting a monitor.
