Q: 2 apple TV devices, but one says home sharing is turned off

I have used apple TV for several years and have recently added another 3rd gen to my bedroom TV.

I have an existing 3rd Gen Apple TV on the living room TV connected to the internet via ethernet cable on the ground floor, and works perfectly.

My iTunes library is on my computer on the 1st floor this is wireless but the signal is excellent.

The second apple TV is on the 2nd floor and is again wired via an ethernet cable. When I turn on this device it says that home sharing is not turned on.... but it clearly is as I can watch content on the other TV from the same library. I have updated all the software and restarted everything at least twice and nothing appears to help..... any suggestions ??

MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008), iOS 6.0.2

just did that and initially I couldn't see the computer on either TV, so then I restarted everything again and I can now see the computer on the same TV that I could before, but not on the newer one....

Might want to work through this:

Get help with Home Sharing - Apple Support

Note the section about being on the same router.

Could you give a little diagram of your network configuration? Is it a single router with WiFi and wired connections? Or are there WiFi access points, ethernet switches, etc. included? It sounds like the required multicast discovery messages are not being routed between the new ATV and the computer. Depending on your configuration, we may be able to suggest a solution.

Our house is wired with all the internet routers etc in the basement. We have 2 boosters on every floor to keep a steady signal.

    In the basement we have    Zy x e l l G S 1 9 0 0 2 4 H P ,  Zyxe ll USG 20 and a switch ( I have no idea what that is though)

The device that works is connected through a cable into the wall (and down to the router) and the one in the bedroom that doesn't work is connected wirelessly..... There is no problem with the wireless signal....

We just tried the old Apple TV device in the same position as where the one doesn't work  was and got the same reply that the sharing was not available... so now I have even less idea than I did before......

OK. What are the "boosters"? Are they WiFi repeaters that receive a WiFi signal and generate another? Or are they WiFi access points, connected to an ethernet cable, and generating a WiFi signal? ATV has been reported to not work well through repeaters.

In your first post, you said that the one that didn't work was also on a wired connection, but it is actually on WiFi, correct? Could you put it on a wired connection, to see if it helps?

I looked up your equipment and I think it's above my pay grade. The Zyxel USG 20 is a very comprehensive internet gateway device. The Zyxell GS1900-24HP is a 24 port GigE managed switch. You don't mention any WiFi equipment in the basement, so I expect the boosters are wireless access points wired to the swirch. I think the problem is that, for Home Sharing to work, multicast messages directed to certain ports need to be routed to all points in the network. The computer server and the ATV are both on WiFi. If they are on the same access point, that's likely a problem. The important ports are the Bonjour and Home Sharing ports listed here About iTunes background processes and server host connections - Apple Support. But I don't know what to tell you about forwarding them in the USG 20. You may need the person who configured this setup.

Or is your USG 20 a 20W (does it have antennas)? In that case, it is a WiFi base station as well, and thlse boosters might be repeaters. The question is do they have a wired connection or not? Sorry for the confusion.

Hmmm thank you for the reply.

We got an internet guy in to set up the whole system, as the whole house in remote control-able, down to the hoover system.... but he didn't know a lot about Apple and apple TV.

The ATV that works is a wired connection, but we did try the one that doesn't work through the wired connection and it still didn't work.. since the old ATV didn't work in the same position I think you are right and it must be something to do with the access points... I will do a bit of reading and see if I can find a solution, or get the guy back in to figure it out.
