Q: turn on do not disturb permanently?

Like so much else in Yosemite, Apple forces you to use something that should be optional. Instead of having Notifications turned off by default so that you can choose to turn it on, it's on by default and you have to choose to turn it off, but you cannot turn it off permanently. It will only turn off for a 24 hour period and then you have to do it again. Or at least I cannot find any way to turn it off permanently. If you know how to do this, please share that info with me. Thanks.
