I cant activate my iphone

I got an iphone 5s from a friend, and he has traveled out of the country. I dont have his contact or anyways of getting to him. But i want to use the phone. I tried activating it but i have tried several times it is not opening. All the phone keeps telling me is sim card is required. Can someone please help me activate my phone?
