Which version of garageBand and iTunes are you using?
You may need to enable the iTunes Preferences > Advanced > Share iTunes Library XML with other applications, then restart both iTunes and GarageBand.
GarageBand will not show you the songs in iTunes that are only in iCloud and not stored locally. And also not the songs that are protected, because digital rights are attached, for example the Apple Music.
Thank you, so there is no way to get around the protection?
Most of the songs sold at the iTunes Store do not have the protection; you can use songs that are showing as "Purchased AAC Audio file", but not "Protected AAC audio file" or Apple Music.
Any Apple Software will prevent you from importing these protected songs, if you then could export them as unprotected from the application and remove the protection this way. You cannot use protected songs as soundtracks for slideshows in Photos or in iMovie either.
You play the songs and record them, but you cannot use the the protected digital audio file.
Command+click on the audio file in the Finder to open the Get Info window. Under General, you will see "Kind". If it says "protected", then that is what léonie is referring to. You cannot import such a file onto GarageBand.
If you have Icons View chosen in the Finder, then you would see a little padlock in the file icon that indicate the "protected" status of that file.
Hope that helps
