You can't directly convert iTunes songs due to the DRM (Digital Rights Management) copy protection. This is the same for songs from any of the major reputable suppliers not just iTunes. There is a workaround however. If you burn the songs to an audio CD you can import them back as MP3. You'll lose some quality in the process but you'll be able to use the tracks on other devices.
