can not connect logitech m320

So i bought a logitech m320 mouse

when the receiver is plugged in, all that happens is that the scrolling side bar appears, however nothing else happens, at first i thought it was the usb receiver being broken, but then the fact that the scroll bar appears makes me think i need to install some drivers of some kind ?

have tried on two mac minis running 10.09.4 and 10.11.3 , and no success with either, any help or suggestions appreciated !
