NOT WORKING: "open pages in tabs instead of windows: always".

howdy

ever since i upgraded to el capitan, my safari won't open in tabs instead of windows. under safari > preferences > tabs i've toggled the radio button between always, automatically & never. the result is always the same, the new window does not have a tab until i create a new tab then there are 2 on the window. is there a setting somewhere else that's over riding the safari preferences?! maddening.

using safari 9.1.1 & os 10.11.5 on a late 2015 imac 21.5" retina 4k

When you open a new window, does a page load/can you make a page load? After rereading your post several times, and doing some testing, what you are describing appears to be normal in Safari 9.1.1 if you can get a website to load.

thanks for the response. i disabled all the extensions & still won't open a new window in tabs. appreciate the effort

eric, i can make pages load when i open a new window. i just have to "command t" to make a tab which ends up as 2 blank tab pages. i used to be able to open a new window & it was already in 1 tab. thanks for the response.

You are welcome. What you are seeing appears to be the new normal.

If you don't like it, send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
