We are trying to set up apple TV and cannot get the icon on the MacBook
Can you assist us with getting the AirPlay icon on our laptop so we can connect it with the television?

What version of OSX are you running?
Have you enabled AirPlay on the Apple TV?
Have you checked the info here Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV - Apple Support, including the troubleshooting links? Note especially the firewall suggestions.
Just for reference, what is your ATV version, see Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support?
People have reported trouble with AirParrot, Air Display, Duet, and other third-party apps. Are, or were, any other those installed? Apparently leftover files from them can upset correct working of AirPlay. Add Splashtop to that list. See Airplay won't change to mirror iMac from Extend Desktop for a lot more detail.
Add iDisplay, ScreenRecyclerDriver and maybe HP Utility to the previous list.
