hotmail on the Mac Mail app

I`m having troubles registering my hotmail account on the Mail app. I`m using OS X El Capitain in a Macbook Pro from 2012.

I used to have this account registered properly, but I had to delete it and now when I try to register again there`s a message saying that the account already exists.

I went to Mail menu >> Add account >> other accounts >> filled up all the correct info and then the message showed up.

I have the @me.com account registered and working, but hotmail I`m not being able to do.

I`d aprecciate any help.

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Your email accounts can be added in Apple Mail and in System Preferences > Internet Accounts.

Deleting an account in either Mail or System Preferences does not actually delete the data.

1) check in Mail > Preferences > Accounts - do you see the account listed but inactive?

2) check in System Preferences > Internet Accounts - do you see the account listed? Is Mail checked?

Go to User's Library (see below)

Scroll down to Mail folder.

In V3 folder you will see several folders. For some users you will see actual names to know what account and others see a number/lettering name.

Check in each folder to find your Hotmail messages. If you have specific folders in Hotmail this might make it easier to determine.

If the accounts are not listed in either Mail or System Preferences > Internet Accounts and there is no data folder in V3 for hotmail, then try resetting Mail back to defaults.

(note before renaming Mail folder, check to see if you have messages stored under the local "On My Mac" folders. If yes, you need to export these first. You can import later but it's easier to export plus you have better results. Also do you have Time Machine backups?

1) In System Preferences > Internet Accounts uncheck Mail option for your me.com account plus any other email accounts you might have listed.

2) Rename the Mail folder in the User's Library to MailXXX

3) Move to the trash the following files in your User's Library:

Scroll to Containers, delete com.apple.mail (folder)

Scroll to Preferences folder: delete the following

com.apple.accounts.plist (file)

com.apple.accountsd.plist (file)

com.apple.mail-shared.plist (file)

com.apple.mail.plist (file)

MobileMeAccounts.plist

Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar.

Empty the Trash

Go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts

Check Mail for your me.com account.

Open Mail

Mail should open with the all new files in the User's Library > Mail folder.

Now try adding your Hotmail account in either Mail > Preferences or System Preferences > Internet Accounts

Note: To add Hotmail select Add other Account. If it does not default to IMAP, I suggest you switch to IMAP!

Incoming Server: imap-mail.outlook.com (Use SSL)

Outgoing Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com (Use SSL, Port: 587, use authentication > password.)

Show User's Library

The User's Library folder is hidden by default. To unhide: Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.

Actually I tried everything you`ve suggested and it didn`t work. But it made me think in another solution, to logoff my iCloud session with my hotmail account and then try to add the hotmail account on Mail. It worked! I`m now downloading all the messages and then I`ll try to login again with my hotmail on iCloud. I hope it works without messing up with anything else. The only thing is that I`ve lost my saved mails, the ones that were saved in the Mail app. I found them on the Mailboxes folder in the library, but couldn`t recover back to the Mail app. Do you may know how to help me with this now? Thanks very much!

Glad to hear you got Hotmail working.

In Mail, scroll down to the local "On My Mac" folders.

Enter Time Machine

Go back to a date when the folders existed.

You can select the folder you want to restore.

The folder will show up in the folder list under com.apple.Mail.Backup folder.

Toggle open to view.

You can move out of the imported folder structure.

Note: Each time you import a folder it will show up under com.apple.Mail.Backup folder. If you don't see right away give it a few minutes depending on size. You might have to quit and reopen Mail to view.

In the folder list in Mail, do you see Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk, Trash?

User uploaded file

If you don't see folders, click on the icon "Mailboxes" at the top left to view folders.

User uploaded file

If yes, scroll down to view "On My Mac". You might need to select Show to view the folders. Hover your mouse over "On My Mac" and you'll see "Show".

User uploaded file

If you don't see "On My Mac", then try creating a folder and saving it under "On My Mac" in the Save option.

Under Mailbox in the Menu bar select New Mailbox.

Under Location popup, select "On My Mac".

User uploaded file

Enter Time Machine while in the "On My Mac" folder list in Mail.

Go back in time to when the folders existed.

Select Restore.
