Way late to this party but I am fairly certain that you can indeed watch the crummy red and "green" (always thought they were blue) 3D movies on a non 3d tv. Those have been around for a long time. I would imagine the red and blue old school style glasses may work better yet on a 3D enable tv but why in the world would anyone ever do such a thing? Actual 3D enable tv's are made to operate on either the true shutter style (active) or the passive style lenses which more kind of just dims your left eye, which causes a similar stutter effect naturally to see the 3D form... if I remember right. That is all...

FWIW, I'm not so sure about that. You actually need a 3D TV to play 3D movies even with "those funny red and green glasses". I don't know of a way to switch a Mac into 3D mode.
