Has anyone tried to use the adapter with a micro-usb to Ethernet adapter or think it might actually work? I don't see anything in the Internet about it so I assume it just won't work but I figured I'd throw it out there. I know there's a way to do what I want with the camera adapter but that's pretty clunky.

I didn't read through the description but I assume that means nor adapted in some way. I wasn't really hopeful that it would work but that probably seals it. I wish they would make a lightning to Ethernet adapter though, it would be pretty useful for configuring equipment with an iPad if you didn't wanna lug around a full laptop.
I agree with you. I've heard rumors the the "hack" method see on countless youtube vids may not work with the latest ios releases. This would put the kibosh on sites were wireless use isn't permitted.
I think the preferred solution is an airport express routers.
