Pictures not showing in camera roll for messages

When I'm in messages and I click the small insert picture icon to the left of the text bar, there used to be a preview of the most recent pictures I took that i could click on and insert quickly into a message to send. Now the only pictures that are there are very old pictures from over a year ago. The only way to send a picture is to go into the photo library from that pop up menu in messages, or go into photos and share via message from there. And even then it's a 50/50 shot if the picture will make it into the text box to be sent. I usually have to try a few times.

I've been able to figure out that this is occurring because I have photos set to optimize iPhone storage and the pictures are needing to be downloaded before they are sent. If I take a picture while off wifi, it shows up in the preview roll in messages as normal. However once those pictures are uploaded via wifi, I'm back to those same old pictures in the preview roll.

This didn't always occur and I've been using the optimize iPhone storage option since its inception. It seems like a bug somewhere but looking for some help of possible. At worst ive at least made apple aware. Thanks n

Hello Shkbilly,

I understand that you're having trouble adding images to messages in the Messages app on your iPhone. In such a situation it can often help to force close all open apps and restart your device.

Force an app to close in iOS

Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

If Messages continues to show unexpected images, the next step would be to reinstall iOS on your device by placing it in Recovery Mode, then choosing Update in iTunes. Prior to doing so, it's always a good idea to make sure that you've got a backup made.

  1. Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
  2. Put your device in recovery mode.
  3. When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

All my best.
