Q: Constant Crash Logs and unusual spotlight behavior???

Mac Book Pro (early 2011) 17" quad i7-16GRAM / 500Gb Crucial SSD MX200

Hi,

I am getting constant crash messages in my console. There has been unusual spotlight behavior as well.

It all began with a lagging index and delay of backup with error message reading "could not complete backup, please try again later"

Spotlight was indexing for extended periods of time. Research presented possible solutions so I tried these-

1.(obvious) adding hd/externals to privacy list then removing to reindex....nope.

2. disabling indexing with terminal commands and re-enabling....nope.

3. found 10.7.5 supplemental update with fix for extended spotlight or time machine activity,

then disabled spotlight,

ran disk utility for repair permissions,

allowed my backup to run and assumed all was well. I thought I re enabled spotlight and the problem was solved but apparently my console suggested spotlight was disabled so I re-enabled indexing and have had some issues backing up again...(keep going)

During my troubleshooting, I consulted a friend who looked at my console. He mentioned disk i/o errors and that i may need to replace my hard drive soon- I was considering the ssd upgrade anyway- so I did the install and upgraded RAM.

Now my attention is directed to my console messages.

I am receiving crash reports by the minute or more. mdsworker showing an invalid address (???-???) ???. I dont have much knowledge in regards to the console and how to read the messages but i do recognize the word crash or error. Any help is appreciated. Cant post a report if needed. Thanks in advance!

looks too short to be a report but maybe a summary? Lots of these...

Check to see if the MBP had kernel panics.  If so  log and post it per these instructions:

    Ciao.

    Hi OGELTHORPE,

Thanks for your reply. Forgive my ignorance here but I have a few questions.

I navigated to my correct diagnostic report folder (Finder/Go/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports) and only see crash logs. (.crash)

The apple article you linked says thats where i will see a kernel panic file (if indeed there is one) but unless im mistaken, I dont see one of those files...

i listed the titles for you to affirm or reject my assumption...

If none of these files suggest a kernel panic then I would ask you where to go from here?

If i am being foolish, and each of these files is its own kernel panic then i'm in way over my head...ha thx again.

The forum software does not permit changing the solved/help fields once they have been selected.

This is what one should see if there has been a kernel panic (This is from my MBP).  Apparently your MBP has not had any:

Let's try a different approach.  Download and post an Etrecheck report:

The Etrecheck report shows that you have several peripheral HDDs connected.  If you disconnect them, is there any improvement?

Also open System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy and select the external HDDs so that Spotlight does not access them.  Any change?

    Ciao.

The peripherals are in fact connected. Spotlight indexing is currently off/disabled. I never actually used spotlight much.

I have a strict hierarchy for organizing folders/docs that left me remembering where about 99%of the  files I need are. Had i more knowledge of spotlight when i first started my Mac Book Pro experience (2011), I may have been more apt to use it. It is possible spotlight has been disabled for quite sometime as I seem to recall a similar indexing issue in the past and would have been disbaled via terminal.

So, as we speak spotlight indexing is disabled per (sudo mdutil -a -i off) so I can make a fresh backup. I accidentally manually deleted some backup files while trying to make space last night and learned very quickly that was a BIG NO NO.  I erased and reformatted my Backup drive and am backing up 1.6TB right now. When that backup has completed, I will re-enable indexing with peripherals on privacy list and see what the result is.

It seems when spotlight reaches its completion and remains idle, but then seems to have indexing hic-cups. Now i mostly understand how spotlight works so this seems to be a normal process (logging categorical info or whatever it does) but one reason I believe there is a problem is because....

as I type a search into the spotlight dialog, my typing is erased and interrupted by indexing. Repeatedly. Not to mention spotlight generates shotty results. This process was on repeat a few days ago and seems to be the constant state of things when indexing is enabled.

???? Under normal circumstances do I not want my externals to be indexed????

Or are we adding my externals to the privacy list to try to isolate the problem?

Apologies for putting so much into each message. I have decent computer knowledge up to a certain point, but when it comes to terminal, activity monitor, console and other administrative processes, I know very little. Thanks for your correspondence....

    Hey OGELTHORPE,

Looks like my backup drive failed and i'll need to consult a friends help as now my issue is completing a backing up as well as solving the spotlight mystery. Thanks much.
